WHEN THE HEART LIES

PRODUCER: VIVIAN EJIKE

YEAR OF PRODUCTION: 2009
LOCATION OF PRODUCTION: LEKKI, LAGOS STATE
LEAD ACTORS: OMOTOLA JALADE EKEINDE, DESMOND ELLIOT
CONTRIBUTING ARTIST: PAUL I.K DAIRO
GENRE: MELODRAMA
REVIEW BY: IGE OYINKANSOLA.O
PLOT: The story begins with a popular singer, Kaytra. Her father is against her secular singing because he is a pastor. He disowns her and refuses to accept anything from her. On the day of one of her shows, a television presenter, Petra comes to ask for an interview. She claims to know Kaytra from a particular airport, but the security men refuse to let her into the show. Kaytra comes out and also denies knowing her.
Petra’s father, chief Tembra is widowed and intends getting married again. Petra’s brother, Tonye is getting old and wishes to settle down too. Chief Tembra intends settling down with a young lagy, sephea. When Chief Tembra brings Sephea home, Petra refuses to accept her on the grounds that she is a gold-digger. Tonye falls in love with an 18 year old upcoming singer, Angel. Angel’s mother dumped her in a toilet immediately she was born. She was found and adopted by the Okafors. When she narrates her story to Petra during an interview on television, Kaytra sees it and begins to cry.
She then remembers how she and Tonye met under unforeseen circumstances, and how they fooled around resulting to her getting pregnant and giving birth to a baby girl. She discovered that her baby girl was Angel.
On narrating the story to her personal manager, Jim, he advises her to open up. She tells Tonye and he tells Angel who becomes apprehensive. In the end, there is a permanent reunion and all issues are sorted out.
PERSONAL ASSESTMENT: This film made a whole lot of sense. There was good use of sequentiality. However, the singing scenes looked so fake and the character name of Paul I.K Dairo (jim) was not given in the cast. Kaytra’s (Omotola Jalade Ekeinde) pregnancy was a flop. It was up to seven months, and her mother didn’t know. It was fake and unrealistic. The timing for the pregnancy period was not well calculated. Tonye (Desmond Elliot) was a marvel. He is a good actor, no doubt. If I am to grade the film, I’ll give it 60%.
CAMERA PLACEMENTS: The use of medium shot was most dominant in the story.
