THE PLOT
The movie basically talks about the difficulty women go through using the perspective of three women.
- Yvonne (Genevieve Nnaji) who is physically abused by her husband Ben (Van Vicker) and the struggles she had to go through and how in the process she was able to find friendship and trust her own decision and how she was eventually able to free herself from her husband’s grip and move on with her daughtesr.
- Kate Henshaw Nuttal who accidentally killed her husband after finding out he was a womanizer and had to relocate to a new area to avoid the nightmares but to avail. She is a lawyer and Genevieve’s next door neighbor. They find friendship in each other and learn to trust and confide in each other and somehow this makes their life more meaningful as they help each other through their challenge.
- Grace Amah a working class lady who goes through a lot personally with her boy friend who is a drunkard and still faces a lot professionally as she faces sexual harassment from her boss (Van Vicker). She eventually gets some form of reprieve when she dupes him after he sexually assaults.
From this three women’s life we can relate one way or the other to their challenges and Van Vicker is seen as the protagonist and is somehow the central character as he comes in contact with all three women one way or the other (with Genevieve as his wife, Kate as his neighbor and Grace as his employee).
ANALYSIS
- The setting and location of the movie is in Lagos from the residential areas to the office, the hospital and the children’s school.
- The picture quality was clear and beautiful and the sound was clear and well filtered.
- Costumes and makeup clearly represented the roles of the actors from the house wife to the working ladies there was no overdone makeup or overdressing as each character dressed and looked their roles.
- Lighting was done well as we could differentiate between day and night.
- The acting was done well as each character was able to bring more than just their written parts to define their roles, from their facial expressions to their body language, however the children did not play their roles flawlessly especially Van Vicker and Genevieve’s daughter who was seen severally looking at the camera, and smiled even at times she should have been sad (like when her dad abused her when she forgot her lunch box in the house at the beginning of the movie)
CONCLUSION
This is one of the few Nigerian films I have watched that has left me at the edge of my seat literarily because from start to finish I couldn’t predict it and there was some form of suspense. It was a very good movie all round.
