VIRGIN’S NIGHT OUT
‘Virgin’s night out’, a play written by Obaro Pink and produced by Chizoba Okeke is a story that is centered on a ‘nun’, Jessica (Stephanie Okereke), who does not know what to do when she faces two big options. The play starts with mother Theresa (Ngozi Ezeonu), bringing little Jessica from the village to the city. She was later brought to a convent school where she met Dorene Oyesanya, the matron of the school. While growing up, she makes friends with some of her fellow nuns, Gabriella (Funto Thompson) and Martha (Anita Morgan) who she shares her thoughts with.
Jessica’s story as a nun later changes when she sees Tony, (Jim Iyke) in a super market with his friend. Tony also notices the presence of Jessica and winks at her. She carries her face away immediately and focuses on what she was buying with her aunty. After they were done, Jim secretly follows Jessica and her aunty back to the convent. When Jessica got back to her room, she called her two friends and talked to them about the girls she came across on her way from the outing. She also commented on the way the girls dressed and said that she liked it. Her friends, not expecting what she said as a nun quickly disapproved of what she was saying and left her to her world of imaginations.
As time went on and despite the difficulties Jessica faced from the convent, she devised various means to sneak out of her room in the school to see Tony. This secret affair was only known to Gabriella who was Jessica’s best friend. After sometime, it was noticed that Jessica no longer stayed around whenever the others were around. So, her movements were being traced and it was soon discovered that not only did she use to sneak out; she was also bringing in Tony to her room to sleep with him. Jessica was eventually punished by the reverend father (Vitalis Ndubisi) because she got into trouble once she went on an outing with Tony.
Despite all the warnings and advice from both her fellow nuns and mother Theresa, Jessica concluded that her place was not in the convent school and that she would like to leave and get married to a man she loved. Tony on his own part faced some opposition from his parents, especially from his father, Sir Orji (Ken Odikwe), because of the decision he made to marry Jessica.
With Jessica almost taking her life because she wasn’t allowed to leave the convent and marry, the reverend father and the parents of Tony finally agrees to let the marriage between their son and the ‘nun’ to take place.
COMMENT S.
The film which lasted for about three hours was quite entertaining as well as educating. We learn from the film that we shouldn’t do what our mind does not want to do. Jessica was forced in the first place to come to a convent and that was why it looked as if her character was different from the other nun.
It was also noticed that the location manager, Dozie Eboh, was able to get suitable locations for the various scenes in the film. Also, the characters acted their parts so well that it looked as if their parts were inborn. Even though the film was a success, some of the scenes were repeated.
